Water is perhaps the most critical resource when it comes to creating a resilient and sustainable future for generations to come. Freshwater biodiversity is decreasing at a faster pace than terrestrial or marine biodiversity. Supply is decreasing on a global scale or becoming saltier, requiring better water treatment technology, and demand is increasing at the same time. It’s time for a revolution in water treatment technology that helps ensure our usage of water and wastewater is as efficient and effective as possible.



A revolution in water treatment


We need water treatment plants, there’s no doubt about that. They treat our water to ensure it’s safe for us to drink and use around our homes. They also supply our farms and industries with the water needed to produce the many goods we need and enjoy.


While they may be tried and true, these traditional infrastructures are highly resistant to rapid change. And it's no wonder. With high operational costs, and such an essential product, a treatment plant is not able to risk downtime to try an innovative, yet unproven new solution. Disruption is not welcomed in this situation.


Nevertheless, change is necessary, and needs drives innovation. Besides costing a lot to run, water treatment plants also produce a significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the rapid climate change we’re living through. Ensuring that they are operating at their most effective and efficient capacity are becoming a priority for governments and industries worldwide.


Artificial intelligence (AI) water treatment technology


New advances in water-related technologies can address global challenges and paint a clearer picture for the decades ahead, ensuring a resilient, reliable, and sustainable future. By implementing artificial intelligence and machine learning technology to find inefficiencies and predict problems before they occur, new advanced technologies like Pani’s software allows water and wastewater treatment plants to save up to 30% of annual operating costs, while also increasing efficiency at these facilities and decreasing their greenhouse gas emissions. Even a 5-10% savings can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, making it well worth the monthly subscription. Since integration of Pani's solution requires no operational downtime or prohibitive plant retrofits, plants can start benefiting from the solution quickly.



SDTC investment in Pani Energy


The recent investment in Pani Energy from Sustainable Development Technology Canada will allow Pani to continue working on this cutting edge technology in the water treatment sector. This federal foundation and flagship program “helps Canadian companies develop and deploy competitive, clean technology solutions, to help solve some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges: climate change, clean air, clean water and clean soil.”

The $2.8M investment, the largest in government funding for water technologies, affirms Pani’s commitment to addressing water treatment plant challenges. Pani does this by helping water treatment plant teams reduce their greenhouse gas emissions through increased efficiency and decreased operational costs.


Better technology facilitates better results and Pani’s solution is estimated to offset emissions that are equivalent to 200 megatonnes of CO2 emissions, or 43 million cars off the road each year!


This funding is another boost in our mission to transform and revolutionize the world of water. By ensuring that we make the most efficient use of our freshwater resources, while also treating used water more effectively, we help keep water sources sustainable and resilient as climate change continues to bring more challenges to our world.
